| pambo's Full Review: Child Magazine |
This is another one of those publications with a little editorial content dropped in to disguise the fact that it’s really little more than a giant forum for ads.
I’ve perused two issues of this publication, but will focus on the August, 2001 edition.
“The 50 Best” toy stores, restaurants, carousels, zoos, clothing shops and other ways to separate you from your money is the main feature. Other stories touted on the cover are:
Slow Down! Secrets of De-Stressing Your Child
Smarter Playgrounds
Top Cruises for Families
The Healthiest Barbecue
All Duded Up! The Newest Denim Looks
and
Want Your Child on the Cover?
In other words, it’s very hip, happening now—you don’t have to worry about serious issues. Buy more! Spend here!
It’s a very beautiful magazine-—the kids are handsome, the language cutesy (there’s an advice column called Girlfriend to Girlfriend, with such heavy-duty advice as tips on how to celebrate Friendship Day; what more can I say?). But for substance, that’s another matter.
The articles are buried between the ads, and frankly, it's hard to distinguish which is which. That's not terribly unusual these days, especially with magazines, but Child seems to have taken the problem to a new low.
The magazine might be helpful if you really need to know what city to visit to enjoy the best carousels but really, how valuable is this buy-buy-buy message worth? Can’t you get the same information from the web? Do you REALLY need to know—or does your child need to have—the “newest denim looks” ?
This is all about promoting the consumer culture, not about family values, whatever they might be, or raising your kids right. Say bye-bye, not buy, to this overpriced ad pretending to be a useful magazine.
